Coracle Inside launches Ex-Offender Online Jobs Board to make it easier to find a job after serving time
PRESS RELEASE | 14 FEBRUARY 2019
Cambridge-based learning technology company Coracle Inside, which already provides its Digital Learning Platform (DLP) to offenders whilst incarcerated, partnered with recruitment tech specialist Highr to create a unique online jobs board designed specifically to connect ex-offenders with job vacancies likely to be open to people with criminal records. More than 11 million people in the UK have a criminal record – an increase of 1.1 million in the last two years alone.
The new Coracle Inside Jobs Board offers 200 jobs each week in London and up to a thousand nationally at launch and plans to grow to advertise more than 3,000 vacancies around the country before the end of 2019. Jobs advertised on Coracle’s Jobs Board are generally semi-skilled roles in high- demand industries including construction, warehousing, social care and hospitality.
Vacancies in companies which have signed up to the government-backed ‘Ban The Box’ and ‘Clean Sheet’ schemes designed to eliminate recruitment discrimination against ex-offenders, will be given prominence on the new Jobs Board. Coracle Inside has also built an algorithm for harvesting additional vacancies in sectors known to be short of staff and looking to fill vacancies.
David Gauke, Secretary of State for Justice at the Ministry of Justice, commented: “Within the prison walls, it starts with education. We must ensure that more offenders leave prison with the basic skills that are essential to entering the workplace and with the skills employers need…..I want prisons to be places of hope and aspiration that can propel prisoners into employment when they are released. In doing so, they will be able to start a new chapter in their lives, contribute to society and become part of this country’s extraordinary jobs story.” 1
Pru Ashby, Head of Brexit & Key Accounts at London & Partners, “London’s status as a global business hub means it has a constant appetite for workers, and employers need to be creative in finding people to fill their vacancies. Coracle’s excellent initiative helps ex-offenders join the workforce, and offers employers a largely untapped source for staff. This benefits both sides, and has the potential to reduce re-offending rates too – a gain for all Londoners.”
James Tweed, Managing Director of Coracle, added: “We must reduce the shameful levels of reoffending in which nearly two-thirds (60%) of offenders leave prison without any identified employment, education or training outcome. Greater access to education behind bars, combined with easier access to meaningful paid work, eases re-integration into society when they’re out. The twin pillars of access to education in prison and finding paid work quickly after release, can together break this damaging cycle of reoffending.”

Notes to Editors:
In May 2015 the Government introduced Through the Gate provision which created services to offer ex-offenders support in finding jobs, securing accommodation and offering finance and debt advice. Although this has worked in some areas, in researching resettlement services for short-term prisoners HMIPP (Her Majesty’s Prisons and Probation Service) did not find a single prisoner who had been helped into employment by Through The Gate provision!
Some sectors are now experiencing serious shortages in labour availability exacerbated by Brexit. The extent of the recruitment challenge in social care was confirmed in the recent National Audit Office report (2018) which found the care worker vacancy rate in England to be 7.7% and turnover at an all-time high of 33.8% in 2016-17.
